Can a Half-Ton Truck Tow a Fifth Wheel?

Short answer: only the lightest fifth wheels, and usually not. It depends on your truck's payload and the trailer's loaded weight, not the brochure.

Typical trailer numbers

Fifth wheels range from ~8,000 lb (lightweight) to 18,000+ lb, with pin weight 15–25% of loaded weight.

Typical truck ranges

Truck class (typical, varies widely)PayloadTow rating
Midsize pickup~1,100–1,700 lb~3,500–7,700 lb
Half-ton (1500/150)~1,300–2,300 lb~7,000–13,000 lb
3/4-ton (2500/250)~2,500–4,000 lb~12,000–20,000 lb
1-ton SRW/DRW (3500/350)~3,500–7,000 lb~14,000–35,000+ lb (5th wheel/gooseneck)

These are broad, rounded industry ranges for illustration, not specs for any model. Your truck's numbers depend on engine, axle ratio, cab, bed, drivetrain and options. Use your own door-jamb sticker and towing guide.

Worked example (illustrative)

A 10,000 lb lightweight fifth wheel at 20% = 2,000 lb pin + 200 lb hitch + 400 lb people = 2,600 lb, beyond nearly every half-ton and within many 3/4-tons.

Check your own setup

Plug your real sticker numbers into the Can my truck tow this? checker, then confirm with a CAT scale weigh.

Safety note: These are planning estimates, not a guarantee your setup is safe or legal. Always verify with your truck's door-jamb sticker, the manufacturer's towing guide for your exact configuration, the trailer's VIN sticker, and a real weigh at a CAT scale. Never exceed any rating.
